An orca from the endangered Southern Resident fish-eating population approaches the boat just moments before swimming directly beneath us.
This photograph was taken in the Strait of Juan de Fuca, where it is required that you must try to get out of the path of any approaching orca. However, this one surprised us, and it would have been a danger to the others for our captain to move at that time, as groups of them were all around us. This was most definitely an exhilarating and unforgettable experience!
Currently, there are only 81 individuals in this genetically-distinct population. Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) and reduced prey availability (Chinook salmon) are two of the biggest threats to their survival.
