Artist's Description

These are four individuals of the Southern Resident orca population. They only eat fish--primarily Chinook salmon--and have been declared endangered, with their total number fluctuating between only about 80-90 individuals. They make their home for most of the year in the waters of Washington State, USA and southern British Columbia, Canada. In the Fall, they typically make several trips south into Puget Sound, and in winter they spend most of their time along the west coast and have been seen as far south as Monterey, California.

Each orca ecotype has a unique culture based around its specific prey preference. The resident orcas of the northeast Pacific Ocean live in multigenerational, matrilinial subgroups within the population, and the offspring--especially males--stay with their mothers for their entire lives.

This photograph was taken from shore, from Westside Preserve on the west side of San Juan Island, Washington (Haro Strait).
